BCA Course Descriptions (PDF)

The high school years represent an important transition to the academic and social independence required in college. Today’s colleges seek students who exceed minimum expectations, who are well-rounded, and who can think critically and creatively. At Bradford Christian Academy, we prepare our students to think, live, and work as Christians able to integrate faith with contemporary culture.

Through the integration of faith and learning, BCA’s curriculum is designed to teach students accurately to analyze, evaluate, and act on new information and ideas. Students learn effective expression of ideas by developing strong, clear writing, speaking, rhetoric, and logic skills. BCA integrates our curriculum across subjects. For example, our students study literature from the same time period that they are studying in history. Science classes require quality writing assignments and oral presentations with proper grammar and spelling. Such interdisciplinary instruction allows students to make important connections between subjects, leading to a more integrated approach to learning.

BCA teachers are highly credentialed in their subject area and passionate about imparting their knowledge to high school students. BCA’s curriculum is challenging and our students have proven that they will stretch to reach high standards when clearly set for them. In an effective high school, a climate of high expectation exists. BCA teachers believe that all of our students have the ability to master the school’s essential curriculum and no student is left to drift along providing minimal work simply to pass the course. Our small class sizes allow teachers to know each student well and help him or her identify gifts, skills, and interests that help shape college and career choices.

When students reach tenth grade, BCA will begin college preparatory activities by meeting with students and parents to form a college plan. We discuss each student’s interests and competencies and identify appropriate colleges and universities along with each institution’s admissions criteria. Each semester, we will review the plan with our students. BCA will also host college preparation workshops for families, bringing in guest speakers to instruct on issues such as preparing for standardized tests and college financing strategies.

BCA’s high school curriculum honors the uniqueness of each individual, respects each student’s God given personality, learning styles, and abilities, and allows for a variety of teaching techniques. Ninety-minute and forty-five minute teaching periods allow for thorough instruction. Homework has the dual purpose of reinforcing classroom material and building independent, disciplined study habits. Our teachers set individual goals for students and communicate regularly with parents to create a partnership in encouraging each child to reach his or her God-given potential in academics, the arts, and athletics in an atmosphere of excellence.

BCA uses an internet-based student information management system, called Veracross, to enhance communication between school and home. Parents can log in and retrieve their children’s homework assignments, track their grades, note after school activities, or email questions and concerns to the teachers.

Bradford Christian Academy educators are as interested in the spiritual development of each student as they are in their academic progress. Faith and values provide the context of all our academic disciplines. Humanities classes look at timeless human issues and God’s work throughout history. Science and math classes weave together a sense of God’s orderly majesty in creation. BCA creates an environment where students are nurtured in a setting sensitive to issues of the heart and grounded in good moral values. Outside the classroom, students have opportunities to learn and grow spiritually through weekly chapel, annual spiritual emphasis week, and community service requirements.

BCA endeavors to create a community environment where everyone matters, everyone is cheered on by peers and adults alike, and everyone is committed to cultivating habits of the heart that show respect for one another and allow us to be governed by grace. BCA cultivates a wholesome atmosphere for high school students to expand their friendships in the context of a caring Christian community and prepares them for successful social, spiritual, and academic independence in college.
